Depending on what you want to see and what time of the year you visit Helsinki, there are different answers to your question. Having born and raised in Helsinki, I voted for public transportation being the best way to see things. You can take 3B or 3T around the city, rain or shine, and see a lot of the sights. You can hop off to see certain attractions and hop back on and not have to worry about not knowing where you're going. The transportation authority has maps that show you what attractions are near which stops. Another tram line that does this is 7A and 7B. Both these lines go in a circle so no worries about not knowing where you started from.

If you prefer plowing through snow to see things, be my guest, but I prefer to sit in a nice toasty tram in the wintertime. In my opinion, not everything in Helsinki, worth seeing, is within walking distance.

I choose public transportation but its waaaay too expensive for my liking...I'm gonna buy a month travelcard to see if that cuts costs....hopefully it will

But if your going from bar to bar then walk...will give you a chance sober up for another round of beers at the next bar woohoo
