    Hello,

how do you say "for the first time"? I was thinking of "ensimmäisestä kerrasta", but I don't know. The sentence is "I was young when I read it for the first time".
And how would you translate "ensimmäiseksi kerraksi"?

    thanks,
    Sigrid

Hello and sorry for the delay in answering.
"For the first time" = ensimmäistä kertaa
the whole sentence would be: Olin nuori kun luin sen ensimmäisen kerran.(reading a whole book till the end)
Olin nuori kun luin sitä ensimmäistä kertaa.(unfinished reading)

Thanks a lot for the help, and sorry for my (extremely) late reply. I've been offline for quite a while.
I'm back, and I should have more questions soon

Default Hi, Liisa. Can you help me?

I'm still in the process of translating my Finnish book. Can you help me with a few lines?

Soitin Villelle etta mita jos hoitaisitte sen homman.

Ville mietti, etta ei tama meidan linjaamme sovi, mutta antaa palaa vaan, kylla se klaarataan.

Ja niinhan ne tekikin, se keikka meni ihan hienosti. Ajattelin, etta oppivathan olemaan vahan isommissakin paikoissa.

I have some of this figured out but thought I'd compare what I got with your translation to see how far off I was.

    Thanks, Liisa!

    Smile Finnish books I use

Hi, from Madison, Wisconsin! I got your request for what Finnish books I use. I have several references that I use. The Gummerus Finnish/English dictionary is extremely helpful. I also use a Helsinki slang dictionary authored by Juhani Makela which I bought in Helsinki. I also use a really good Finnish textbook that I got from the University here when I was studying Finnish which is called Kuulostaa Hyvalta (Sounds Good) authored by Lili Ahonen. Then there's the Websters online dictionary which is my second biggest resource (websters-online-dictionary.org, I think). I also have a personal Finnish dictionary that I made up myself of slang or words that I haven't been able to find anywhere. I've collected them over the years from Finnish people I know and from a Finnish tutor who helps me here in Madison.

I need all the help I can get when I translate! My last resort is to Google a word I can't find anywhere. Lots of times, I luck out and find a word that way.

    Hope this helps!

    Terveisin,

    Finnfan

Soitin Villelle etta mita jos hoitaisitte sen homman.
(I called Ville about what if they took care/administrated this occupation/duty)

Ville mietti, etta ei tama meidan linjaamme sovi, mutta antaa palaa vaan, kylla se klaarataan.
(Ville thought, that none of our line/connection/bus/policy suited, but gave "light" but, of course it "cleared")

Ja niinhan ne tekikin, se keikka meni ihan hienosti. Ajattelin, etta oppivathan olemaan vahan isommissakin paikoissa.
(and thus they used/took also, the gig went quite badly. I thought, that (hmm I really doubt oppivathan is a word) "X" were going to be in few biggest areas.

it is not translated perfectly, but maybe that can help you understand basicly what they mean there? its always really hard to translate finnish into english words, because most of the time you cant really put it into words. the words between " " are guess, but there is just the oppivathan word I really have no clue what it means.
I hope this give you some clue about what they meant...
what is the context of these sentences? that would help a bit to know
