Question Research on the Finnish Civil War

    Hi, everyone -

I am a high school student in northern New Jersey, and I am currently doing research on the Finnish Civil War for the International Baccalaureate program. I have had trouble finding sources for my paper, so I was wondering whether anyone here might be able to share any useful information with me.

I am trying to find out specifically whether World War II eased tensions between Finland's Reds and Whites. I know that this is an extremely sensitive subject, but I was wondering whether any of you guys have parents or grandparents nearby who lived through World War II in Finland, or are knowledgeable about that time period, and would be willing to let me interview them and use them as sources for my paper. Any help would be enormously appreciated, and if you have any questions about the project please do not hesitate to contact me.

    Thank you so much,
    Andrew Kahn

    Hi Andrew,

I've read up on the finnish civil war and other parts of history. I think yes the war did help alot.

From what my friends told me the Reds were farm labourers and factory workers etc. They generally had little education and low literacy rates. So even though they were the Reds, they knew little about Communism and hoped only for improvement in their situation.

The movie "Ambush" or Rukajärven tie has a scene where some men are arguing over the Reds V Whites.

    Rukajärven tie (1999)

It was quite a violent time in Finland, there is still alot of shame about how the reds where treated, there are some movies about it that I won't send you links to as they are quite brutal and not suitable for a high school students.

There is a book and a newly released movie based on it called "Taalla pohjantahden alla", the book is written by Vaino Linna. That would be a good source of information for your project, there are two books afterwards about the main family involved.
