From my experience, there are no cheap restaurants in Helsinki. hehehe... I haven't lived there in almost 9 years though, but at least compared to what food costs in the US, nothing in Finland is cheap. You pay like $8 for a meal at McDonald's! I spent almost 3 weeks in Helsinki last October and I wasn't able to buy much under 8 euro for meals. Most non-fast food places were over 10 euro easily. Maybe someone who currently lives there and knows where the students go eat could tell you better deals.

There is good food in the railway station ravintola (restaurant), it is reasonably priced too. But, dont go there in the late evening or afterwards as the food has been sitting around all day. I learned that the hard way, lets say I nearly broke the land speed record trying to get back to my hotel room

I like Pyyti Pannu, infact I make my own version everyweek with onions, celery, peppers, mushrooms, frankfurters, herbs and whatever else comes to hand. I dont add diced potatoes, just make some over chips separately

I nearly forgot to say that the guide books recommend those on a tight budget to go to the University canteen, I have never been there, but I am sure the food is very cheap there.
You are posting too fast!

I am sorry to tell you afinnegirl... $10 dollars wont buy much anywhere, the Euro is very strong at the moment.

guyz I think the cheapest thing is the Turkish pizzeria cause they have lots of special offers and most of them u can find Pizza with 5 Euro or like the Pizzeria I used to work for before which make the pizza plus 1 lettre beer for 9 Eur .
or u can try the Wrong nodels its near MEmphis its quite good and with 5 Eur u can have a good meal but It dosnt satisfy me at all.
any way yes its hard to find cheap resturant , but I think u can make food at home its better and much cheaper and much delicious than resturants.

Go to the supermarket, buy bread, cold meat and cheese, or whatever, and make sandwiches in your room, where ever you are staying. That's the cheapest way and we often do that when we are on holidays. We eat some meals out, but not all. It gets way too expensive.

phewww

Hell yeah its expensive to eat in Helsinki....the cheapest I know is Macdonalds which is 6 euros for a meal...other then that yer screwed....

But um supermarkets are the best place to go then you can find some cheap traditional finnish food like lihapirakkas and karjalanpirakkas (hope i spelled those right) which are both VERY good

or

Just build a lil fire on the beach and cook some sausages and crack open a lonkero

Sweet
