Question Should Finland tighten its gun law ?

What do you think, should Finland tighten its gun law after the events of Jokela and Kauhajoki ?

Absolutely!

Or we could disband the police forces and our armies and look after ourselves.

I believe that we should raise the limit to owning a gun about 21 and even then the rules for owning one should be very strict. Before you can own one i reckon you must go through a examination with a expert to see if you are fit to own a gun.And even then if you do pass for one, you should report to your local police station to sign a gun register.

for sure. They cannot let things like this happen again.

In here it's very difficult to get a weapon, you have to get a lot of permissions, medical tests, Psychological tests and you have to have your military service done. It's really hard to keep a weapon. But the black market is aways there.. hidden...

Some time ago, the authorities started a campaign to "dis-arm" the people which was very very effective. About 15.000 guns/rifles/whatever weapon were got back to the army. And weapons like AK-47s were found around there, this one was illegal since the Pinochet's regime started.

We do need to sort out something soon, or we will have another youth shooting students and other citizens again. Its worrying and seeing as finland is also ment to be one of the safest countries aswell.

i agree with Gammer and Blazco_
in my country they do a dis-arm action too
and they change the weapons for food or some basic goods to the people
and it works

Default Definately

Yes, its fairly simple, access to guns should be very, very restricted.

There is no need for hand guns, as in side arms. Its not as if its south central Los Angeles with gangland drive-by shootings going on. It will become that way unless reform is enacted. I doubt that most Finnish parents, school authorities or the police want to see a situation were metal detectors are set up airport style at the entrances to schools.

Only rifles and shotguns should be allowed for hunting. The criteria for owning a weapon should be urgently reviewed. It is sad to see in Finland twice in barely 2 years, a repeat of what happened on the 20th April 1999 in the US. I really think that the film Bowling for Columbine should be shown in all Finnish high schools as compulsory viewing.

There is obviously a gap in how gun ownership is administered ; the police spoke to the guy just one day before he went on a killing spree. That shows that they knew about him, had concerns about his postings on youtube but were not in a position to take his weapons away from him even given the nature of his online postings.
