Whaaat?! Where have you heard something like this? I can say that put into action this kind of an idea is quite impossible, 'cause there would come so large amount of protests as a signature adressess that the goverment couldn't do it, especially when there's election coming...Only what I think^^

Noooooooo!!!!! I can't see that happening, and I personally wouldn't want that. I have a strong pride in being Helsinkian (not sure if that's the right term) and I wouldn't want to be mixing with them people from Vantaa and Espoo.

Seriously though... It might make it easier to work around the metropolitan area and maybe it would help with some housing issues as well. I just don't see that happening though. I remember all the controversy with the extension of the metro line to Espoo and all that. I don't know what's happened with the plans/construction, but even that was so hard to get through with all the financial issues and all. I think it would make Helsinki a stronger city, but what would they call the city? Which one of them would be willing to "merge" into the other?

Same feelings here. Proud to live in the most posh city of Finland - Espoo. No need to join the hippies of Helsinki

But transport prices of going from Espoo, via Vantaa (about couple of streets) to Espoo should not be double compared to Espoo - Espoo trip.

Aaaa, now I got it, I did wonder that there was something strange in this
First of all, they're talking about "kuntaliitos = merger of municipalities", which is totally different thing than making one big city from them. In merger of municipalities the citys are still the same, but they'll merger to one municipality which has it's own local government deciding for example the municipality's taxes. And plus that, they're just talking about giving an account of the good and bad side of this kind of a merger between these cities... and that will take a long time, which means that they can't even start to talk about the merger of municipalities itself before many years have passed by.

Thought I wouldn't anyways want these cities to be in merger of munucupalities, 'cause the locals in Helsinki and Vantaa for example are quite different from each other beginnig from the way we talk (yes there IS differences even though the people has been mixed) and everyone has got their pride.
And anyways the municipalities can hardly take care of the current districts they have, not even talking about bigger districts. The politicians only want to make more money and that way they make the people's life more insecure...*don't like at all*^.^

Aren't they all called the Greater Helsinki area anyway? In Perth, we have about a dozen cities, but it's all Perth. I don't think it's a bad idea. It's pretty much all Helsinki to me anyway.
