I don't know where he got that from. Norwegian is very easy for us swedes to understand. Can't see why it wouldn't be easy for norwegians to understand swedish.

There may be different degrees of understanding. I understand about 50% of Norwegian, having barely started to study it, owing to my Swedish, which is good, but not perfect. People who know many words of their own language (e.g. Swedish or Norwegian) understand a related language easier.

There is also a geographical factor: Swedes living closely to the border with Norway speak dialects which are close to Norwegian, and the Swedish spoken in Skåne resembles Danish.

Swedish is a much easier language to learn and understand

But if you are coming to Turku you should learn Finnish rather then Swedish, although everyone seems to speak good english here and are very friendly.

In Tampere (Swedish speaking town) better to speak Swedish then Finnish.

Hi Nasu. Sorry to put you right but Tampere is definitely NOT considered as a Swedish speaking town.

The Swedish speaking areas are mainly by the coast line ... some in Loviisa neighbourhood, Porvoo, Helsinki... going west to Karjaa, Parainen, Tammisaari, Parainen, Pietarsaari, Vaasa, Kokkola. Maarianhamina in Åland is a matter of its own!!! You won't get any service there if you don't speak Swedish. To my mind those islands could be floated to Sweden any day!

As to easiness of languages. There you are right. The Swedish, the Norwegian and The Danish have so easy to understand each other whereas us Finns are like outsiders cause our language has very little in common with the other Scandinavian languages. I myself am lucky to master quite a few so I don't have any issues about that. But all I can say - languages can be difficult to learn but once you've done it, it's really worth all the time and maybe even struggle
