Default Kia ora from New Zealand

    Hi there,

Im Case, im 38, and I'm madly in love with a Finnish lady who loves me equally back. I'm planning on visiting Finland in the near future, with a plan of moving there if everything works out. Im currently studying Finnish, though feel like I'm not really getting anywhere with it because nobody teaches the language in New Zealand, and keep finding myself running up against brick walls.

Luckily I was born in England, and have dual citizenship - European and New Zealand. I am a bit concerned however about how I'll find a job, learn enough of the language to be employable and in order to get by, and have many questions about moving over there to live. Thats basically why I joined this forum.

Keep studying finnish,at least try to learn basics etc,it will help ya a lot.
Jobs are rare atm, even native finns cant find work.If you have right qualifications, you might find work in international companies without knowing the language though. Those are usually IT ones.
British citizenship will give you the advantage of *not visiting finnish consulate in new zealand*,nothing more:P.If you have british overseas passport, rules might be different.

But if I have European citizenship, wont I just have to report to the local police station if I plan on staying longer than three months in Finland? All the material I've managed to find online seems to point towards being a European citizen allowing me to live in Finland - is this incorrect?

    Default Citizenship of the EU

    My two cents:

Citizenship of the European Union - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'm guessing you need to dig up some EU handbook, but it does say on that webpage that one of the rights of being a citizen of one of the EU countries includes: the right of free movement and residence throughout the Union.

    Good luck!

Edit: and this might help: http://ec.europa.eu/youreurope/citiz...e/index_en.htm

Kiitos Kattis. As I'm planning on getting some kind of job, even if its just washing dishes in a cafe or cleaning toilets, before I move over to Finland I'm hoping that residency shouldnt be a problem. Im still reading all these webpages as saying that I have the right to reside in Finland as a European citizen, but will need to be working there if I am to live there permanently.

you just have to register yourself to police. For that you have to have a reason, like *studying, family ties, work*.Otherwise they wont register ya,but you can still stay more than 3 months,no one will deport ya or anything.

Language Learning with Livemocha | Learn a Language Online - Free! ... the perfect place to get an easy working knowledge of Finnish & many other languages for that matter.

Half of my family is Kiwi & the other half Finnish. I've done this whole moving to Finland visa thing, & researched all the laws extensively. The best possible thing you can do if you are up for it, is open your own business in Finland rather than try to get a job.

Here's how it goes...you get paid a salary to study Finnish for about 9 months. It's not a truck load but it's enough to work & a great thorough course.

Next you get paid a monthly salary to start your business, which makes it very easy & if you have a good business idea, there are lots of other grants and loans you can get to help you on your way.

With your citizenships & situation you are really in a good place & if you do it right will have no hassles at all! British people can live and work here indefinitely. Registering with the local police is easy as can be.

Of course if you get legally married & have a kid, you'll get your residence like its an emergency.

Also better to apply for your residence before moving here as if you do it while here, you are not allowed to work or study while the processing is going on.

The other thing you can do is register any kind of business in NZ, then come to Finland visa free for two months, say you want to register a branch of your business which is also straight forward and there are free services to help you like yrityshelsinki.com and then you'll get a one year work permit almost automatically, which you can then transfer to permanent residence at the end of the year if you've met the requirements & eventually get citizenship or just live happily ever after on your permanent residence, since with your current citizenships you don't really need Finnish.

P.S. Also don't believe everything you read on this site as some people just give random info off the top. The facts are very simple & clear if you google Finnish Immigrations, you'll find their website and it explains everything. Because you are British you can live in Finland, no problem. That's a fact. If you really want to work, jobs are not hard to find. Don't settle for dish-washing!! You can for sure do better, there's no reason for it! Oh, & prepare for cold like you've never felt before! Eat lots of Vitamin D since your body won't be used to the dark.
