The official Finnish entry for next year's Academy Awards competition was named on Wednesday. "The Home of the Dark Butterflies," directed by Dome Karukoski, will be a candidate in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
The film is mostly set in a hard-knocks boys' reform school on an island. It is based on Leena Lander's novel of the same name from 1991, which was published in seventeen countries and optioned by a Hollywood studio.
The five nominees for the best foreign picture prize will be named in January, a month before the awards ceremony.
The only Finnish film ever to be short-listed as a nominee was Aki Kaurismäki's "The Man Without a Past" in 2002. Neighbouring Sweden, meanwhile, has had 14 such nominees. One of them, 1983's "Fanny & Alexander," won an Oscar for its Finnish producer, Jörn Donner.
