you need to have a friendly-immigrant attitude to do this..and frankly, they are not friendly at all..especially if you have dark skin.... don´t even say hello, good morning when they meet you in the building..i ´ve never seen such rudeness in my life!! they just ignore you.. and what about the fantastic weather here?? 3-4 hours of gray light during the whole winter.....strong, cold wind all-year around...mmmmhh..very attractive!!
jobs situation: what decent jobs are available if you dont speak finnish??
I am soo disappointed (and i have a Finnish husband ..)

About the english language. In my opinion, almost the whole world speaks it. So, I think it should be used to communicate with other countries, like doing some trades from a country to a different one. Of course doing this kind of job, usually you will use only english. But if the companie is finnish, in Finland... why do they have to speak english? I don't get it. Of course it's not a easy language to learn, so the employees need a time. Maybe doing a half time job, and studying the other time is a good idea. This way you can hire 2 people, paying like if they were one, while they still can't speak the language. Then after they can communicate and understand it, in a good level, the employer can decided which person is the best for the companie. This way, the other person could at least have some recomendation letter or something like.

You do realize that Finns are like that no matter what color your skin may be? As a people, Finns keep to themselves. It's considered almost crazy to look someone in the eye as you pass them on the street or sit across from them on the metro. There are always exceptions to rules and you should try to find people who are more open minded about foreigners. I personally am trying to do that right now. I don't want to hang out with plain Finns and thus have joined several international groups to meet people who are either foreigners who have moved to Finland or Finns who are interested in being more globally aware.
    Follow your bliss!!!

Default Re: Finland Urged to Become More Immigration-Friendly

Hi there, I'm from México. I'm planning to move to Finland next year.

In my country the situation is critical; we have hundred of deaths every day because of violence, México is the second country with more death and violence, after Irak (a country invaded by USA and with a civil war). The economy in México is the worst in América, about 65 million of people living in poverty, that's more than 50% of the country population and many of them live in misery, a lot of children die because of a normal flu or a diarrhea, diseases than can be cured with simple medications.
Honestly I feel sorry and ashamed about México, I don't feel proud to be mexican, we have the worst rankings in education, health, culture, science, technology, ...

I work as a software developer, my income is about 1500 dollars / month, I could make twice that money in USA cleaning bathrooms or collecting tomatoes, but here in México the minimum wage per month is 100 dollars. I've read that in Europe the minimum wage is about 1000 euro.
I know that mexican situation is because of many factors, corruption, shit politicians, but mainly because uneducated people. Look, most people spend their lives in front of TV screens feeding their brains with garbage (soap operas, talking shows, tendencious news), the average mexican reads 1/2 book each year. So the people in the government and corporations use that ignorance in the population to treat them like slaves. It's a very sad situation, I can talk just with as few friends about art, science or things that interest me, because most of people just talk about tv shows or the football game of the weekend, if you don't see tv you don't have a chance to establish a chat with them.

I feel frighten, I can't walk in a street (day or night) without the thought of being kidnaped or murdered. I've been beaten several times in robberies, and all the things I can do to help my country aren't enough if most people don't do as well:
I pay my taxes, but politicians use that money to pay their salaries, travels, whores, expensive chairs for their offices or ads in tv where they say "we are working for you", the remaining is for doing bad their jobs.
Most self-employed people don't pay taxes because they work in the streets selling food, pirate cd's or chinese cheap stuff; big corporations neither pay taxes, they have lawyers and accountant that make legal tricks to avoid paying taxes. I don't litter, but most people do. Entire forests, wild-forest, rivers, and beaches are being depredated. I feel very bad, because I can't do anything effective to improve my country.

Those are some of the reasons why I want to move to Finland, most mexicans go to USA or Canada, but I don't like the USA way of life and Canada is becoming so strict about mexican immigrants.
I would like to be in Finland for about 5 years. Right now I'm learning finnish, I would like to arrive at least with the enough level to communicate basic things, I'm sure I'll learn it faster once I can talk with finns. The problem is that I feel scared, It will be terrible if I don't get a job. I can be there just 3 months and after that I don't want to stay illegally. I'm also afraid about prejudices and racism I'll find in Finland. I know that right now the worldwide situation is bad, but things shouldn't be too hard for good will people. I just want a nice place to stay, a peaceful flat to read, a good income that allow me work in my creative projects. Well, next year I'll see what will happen.
