Like many countries, Finland needs to attract more foreign workers to offset the effects of an ageing population. At a two-day seminar in Helsinki on migration Thursday and Friday, experts compared notes on how to improve the integration of immigrants.
The competition to attract immigrants could become fiercer in the future. With populations ageing throughout Europe and North America, countries may find they've got to improve their game to attract immigrant workers.
The Finnish Institute of Migration says that Finland should recognise that it's not the only country looking to attract immigrants. Immigration-friendly countries like Canada are also trying to woo foreigners.
At the seminar hosted by the Academy of Finland and the Austrian Federal Ministry for Science and Research, researchers warned the challenge could be particularly tough for Finland, where immigration is a relatively new phenomenon.
Some researchers say Finland could learn from Austria's mistakes -- where immigration has often been viewed negatively.
Furthermore, experts say Finland could place more emphasis on language programmes and on-the-job training. The migration institute says there should be more incentives for employers to hire immigrants, as so many immigrants are currently unemployed in Finland.
The think tanks conclude that as a small country, Finland must make sure its game plan is sound if it wants to be considered a serious contender in the competition for foreign labour.
