Finland Urged to Become More Immigration-Friendly
Like many countries, Finland needs to attract more foreign workers to offset the effects of an ageing population. At a two-day seminar in Helsinki on migration Thursday and Friday, experts compared notes on how to improve the integration of immigrants.
The competition to attract immigrants could become fiercer in the future. With populations ageing throughout Europe and North America, countries may find they've got to improve their game to attract immigrant workers. The Finnish Institute of Migration says that Finland should recognise that it's not the only country looking to attract immigrants. Immigration-friendly countries like Canada are also trying to woo foreigners. At the seminar hosted by the Academy of Finland and the Austrian Federal Ministry for Science and Research, researchers warned the challenge could be particularly tough for Finland, where immigration is a relatively new phenomenon. Some researchers say Finland could learn from Austria's mistakes -- where immigration has often been viewed negatively. Furthermore, experts say Finland could place more emphasis on language programmes and on-the-job training. The migration institute says there should be more incentives for employers to hire immigrants, as so many immigrants are currently unemployed in Finland. The think tanks conclude that as a small country, Finland must make sure its game plan is sound if it wants to be considered a serious contender in the competition for foreign labour. read the issue in YLE so what do thing about this issue guyz , what is the main problem for the foriegners if Finland it self said that it needs lots of imgrants so is it just a languages problem or its the cultural problem thats the immigrants cant integrate in , eager to hear your opinions |

well, the problem is that companies in Finland communicate in Finnish internally. Either immigrants have to learn the language (which can take ages and may distract skilled people to come to Finland - why should they spent 3 years learning Finnish and being unemployed when they can get a job somewhere else) or companies have to adapt a bit and use more English within their company.

I think Snow will answer you so well and with Passion . and you should know Kaveri ,that what you want of skilled educated ppl are already here and they fill ur country, but what the article is talking about is the manpower needed for the basic jobs and mostly the jobs that lots of Finnish cant do or dont like to do may be and same time the profesional ppl . . so wear your glasses . and I am waiting for Snow to answear you and the other educated foreign members.

Oh, now I must assume you dont understand what the news story you posted is all about. But it's not your fault as it didnt tell the backgrounds etc. Well, anyway... It's about people who were born during the "Baby boom" (they are called "suuret ikäluokat" in finnish) after the ww2, a certain group of people. It's not about 700 000 retiring cleaners, it's about 700 000 people - who have been in work life atleast 30 years - retiring and due to ageing now having their special needs. This really wont open any doors to Finland for uneducated person. Cleaning and other shitty jobs are already done by foreigners and young uneducated Finns - they arent retiring nowhere. Hehe. Sure most of these re-opening jobs can be called "basic jobs" as you did, but still they are something uneducated person just cant do. |

yes I admit that there is lots of Educated ppl foreigners in Finland without getting the real job they might deserve and I think main problem is the Language cause most of them constrate on geting an English speaking job which there are lots of competence , so if they just learn the language they might have more opportunities for better job.
but I think there is still a welcoming problem that lots of the ppl still prefer semi educated Finnish instead of well educated foreigners , in a way its good cause the country need to help the native first but inn other way we gonna missed lots of talented ppl who will be as soon hunted by other countries like Cnada ,Australia , Irland ,Switzerland , UAE , and etc . so I beleive that its more depend on the foreigners them self . |

Basically,if you're in a foreign country and want to work there, you should learn the damn language!
Firms can open some english positions and slowly turn it to finnish,it is possible at least |
