Could it mean that the Finnish language will disappear in the distant future?

I think that's crazy. Someone told me that children of refugees who are born in Finland get Finnish citizenship (I haven't checked the facts) but if they can't speak the language of the country, don't you think that's wrong. I feel quite strongly about this and I find it appalling. Why wouldn't you want your child to learn the language of the country you live in, when it's so much easier for them to learn it than an adults?

I just don't get it... This is beyond me! Even in the US, where I've lived for a long time, kids of immigrant parents learn the language even if the parents don't speak a word of English. The kids then end up being the interpreter between the parents and the society, but if you don't know the language and your kids don't know it either, then who's going to take care of your matters.

I couldn't believe this article when I saw it, but in a way it does make sense. I don't think the Finnish society has the resources to deal with this issue though and someone in the parliament has to do something about it.

Been actually thinking of getting into politics myself and supporting a huge overhaul on the immigration policies and this 'kotoutus' stuff...
    Follow your bliss!!!

Yes i agree, Finnish people should speak Finnish and any other language that is helpful in business or travel should come secondary. I live in Canada atm and when people come here we expect them to speak english. (or french) So reading that was a little shocking.

As for refugee children granted citizenship, I believe even if your born in Finland the citizenship of your parents announces yours. I have been wrong before though. Wouldn't that be a total poke in the good eye for anyone who is trying hard to learn the language and intergrate into Finnish society only to be trumped in line by some fugee' who showed up on the airbus cos their country sucks...?

I think it's very selfish for parents to do that.
Also because I would give almost anything to be fluent in another language.
And who WOULDN'T take the time to learn Finnish... It's beautiful.

It is all well and good saying that these children should learn Finnish and that their parents should also learn it and how important it is that they learn it.

However what kind of support is available for these people to learn Finnish?
What support is available for helping these people to become accustomed to Finnish culture?

Many of these people I presume are refugees and probably don't speak English or French or a major European language.

So how important is it to the Finnish that their guests learn Finnish? From what I have heard from foreigners in Finland the supports are quite poor indeed not withstanding the difficulty in making Finnish friends.

I fear that this is going to be a major problem for Finland into the future, and it is one that only the Finns can solve themselves.

It's quite alarming to know about this, and well, if I go to a country to live there, I ALWAYS try to learn the language. I am quite a language nerd, I have a skill that allows me to learn them maybe more easily than other people, but it's unacceptable that you gain finnish citizenship cause of your refugee status, and never learn the official language of your host country.

people who postulate for finnish citizenship needs to have at least intermediate skills of finnish or swedish. so why give those citizenship to refugees?

I get also really annoyed when immigrants come here and don't want to learn french. we already feel quite assimilated with english surrounding us, that sometimes we feel like we get the immigrants to suppress the french language. which is happening, in the Montreal area.

And from what I've learn in some linguistic and anthropology classes, the humans have the capacity to learn any languages, but it absolutely must be in a social context to be able to learn and master a language. the younger you are in contact with any languages, the easier it will be for you to learn the language. Kids learns from hearing the language. They analyse the sounds, the morphemes and phonemes, to distinguish the limits between words, analyse word functions in the sentence, and try to apply it in concrete examples. So it's not rare a kid makes mistakes with verb conjugation, cause it can distinguish the verbs and compare it to other verbs endings, to generalise the whole grammar rule. Then the kid will apply that rule to any verb, even though not all verb ends in the same way. That's why they need a social contact with language. Then people can correct their mistakes, and they'll try again to find the logic to the rule.

So, it's quite weird adults don't want their kid to be in touch with the local language, cause if they can't speak finnish, they can't go to school, and if you don't go to school, you have no job, no money, no way to survive much.
