Yok kazanmadılar! I guess you could say they lost in the best possible way, Finland was saved from being occupied and becoming a Soviet satellite, but they lost in the terms that Russia achieved, eventually, their initial goals of putting more land between Leningrad and the Finnish border.

It's somehow funny but it seems to me this "sobering attitude" you refer to can also be found in relationships Finns have with each other ; when discussing with Finns (that's my own view of things of course) you seldomly hear people going to the core of the topic when it's a vexed issue ; the conversation usually ends up itself by a silence or a discreet "niin...". Meaning by that it's no use arguing here since discussion could last forever and we aren't here for that. I must admit it is something I appreciate when I'm there (eventhough we're discussing here!

When we say that Finland was the victor in World war 2, what we really mean is that Finland won a moral victory.

There was and still is no way that Finland could defeat the might of the Soviet Union or present day Russia. But the victory discussed above reflects the accomplishments of such a tiny nation compared to the vast resources of the Soviet Union.

There was no way Finland could win, but they performed a miracle insofar as they maintained independence in the face of a mighty enemy.

But I can't help questioning how he had enough cash to buy an entire island lol, via legal means..?

Good article though, pretty informative figure wise. Russians are also now the leading investor in properties here too, the immediate results being profitable but also a cause of Turkish shop owners quadrupling their prices that hits everyone else in the long term.

I am so surprised that the Finnish government allows this. There will be problems in future, we have lots of towns in rural Ireland that are full of holiday homes. Young families cannot afford to settle in their home towns and so are forced to leave. These towns are practically deserted during most of the year. Of course during the summer, crime and congestion goes up. Eventually these towns are populated solely by outsiders who do not contribute to the region.

Maybe it's time villages in Ireland introduce local currency then like the Lewes pound in East sussex
Forces people to contribute to the local economy.

It's interesting to see that laws allow Russians to settle in Finland and at the same time prevent finnish-speaking Finns from settling in Aland...

Same problem on Brittany's coasts and developing in the inland more & more..:-/

I don't think the Finns would want to pay up to regain this territory. It would just cost too much for everything to get back to "normal."

One day it might return to be Finnish soil but I would not hold my breath. Russia wants to hold on to the land they gained. And right now I would not want to piss them off, Georgia is on my mind.

Even though my father's family came from there, I would not like to see anyone go through the hardship they went through.
