I am interested in hearing about your opinions on the Lisbon Treaty. This treaty will be voted on by referendum on June 11th in Ireland. We are the only EU country that will get the oportunity to decide. If we vote no, then the Treaty cannot be ratified by the EU.
This is quite controversial at the moment as it changes the way the EU is run, some people believe it is will remove power from elected governments and give it to unelected bureaucrats in Brussels. Some even believe that its the first step towards the one world government! Here are a few links: |

I'm all for EU and many things it has brought along, made several things easier etc. but I am NOT for the "United States of Europe".
Individual countries should be able to keep their governments and decide on their own business and laws. If all decision-making is taken to Brussels, that's no good. We are an independent country with own language, government, laws and that's the way it should be even in the future! I envy you Irish for your referendum. I wish Finland would have that too, but as it looks like, that will not happen. Please vote NO !

It seems so far that the Lisbon treaty referendum here in Ireland has been defeated.
There has been a relatively high turnout, but we have voted "NO". I hope that we have represented the people of Europe. Most people didnt understand the treaty, so I think the onus is on the EU and our own governments to create treaties that are much more understandable to the people. More information << here >> |

I'm glad the Irish were given the democratic choice to vote,
It is interesting that other EU states do not respect their voting public enough to allow them to vote on such key issues. It's so important for the survival of the EU that it is a body that actually has grass root support. I am un-easy about a 'United states of Europe' especially when we get into the possibillity of the Europe Union having a common defense policy. I think a lot of countries that are currently members of the EU would be uncomfortable about a EU with a military basis. That may change however if the EU were nudged in the right / wrong direction by geo-political events. |

The "NO vote" was just as much a protest against our politicians as it was against the treaty. Just look at Irish newspapers and see for yourselves.
If there was another vote, it would probably get through, but only if the government do not turn it into an opinion poll. |
