Default University Admissions in Finland have changed!

    From www.admissions.fi

''In 2009, the basis for admission have changed. All those applicants who are applying with a qualification completed somewhere else than in Finland and are not citizens of an EU/EEA-country, must provide a proof of language skill.''

well i wont apply to any polytechnics, but I doubt they will ask americans, canadians or australians to take english language tests... since most of them it's their mother toungue (its not mine though). Even at my university, all we have to do is speak with the lady in charge of those tests so she can judge wether or not you can go on exchange programs. if she think you aren't good enough, she will ask you to fallow english classes at the language center and you will have to go again to see her and check if you got any better.

If you are good enough, she will give you the attestation that you are fluent in English.

but hey! if I study in Finland for a semester, I will probably be in Oulu!
but there are chances I might go to helsinki too. I will have to see. It will depends of many things, because residences are cheaper in Oulu, and if my host family is okay with hosting me for a few month (and I am willing to pay them too!), then maybe it would be affordable to stay in helsinki. But it also depends if in Montreal they approve the classes I will attend to in Helsinki. Anyway. we will see. it's not tomorrow that I will be in Finland.. sadly

I think it's a great decision to ask for a proof of language skills. I'm learning in an international degree program and we have two students outside EU who have terrible English. It's basically impossible to understand them and for them it's also hard to understand what they are being taught. The Chinese girl is all the time trying to translate everything with a dictionary during the classes but it's not really working out.

In our school (Jyväskylä University of Applied Science) all international degree program students have to take English classes and foreigners also have to take Finnish classes. I've met a few people in this Finnish group who barely speak English and I really don't understand why they were accepted to study here. Oh wait, I know, they are internationals and that's the reason. But seems like nobody really thought how they are going to survive here.

as i said ingrid, they're already testing applicant's english skills in entrance exam
I already sent a mail to oulu uni about them but it seems they're closed because of chrismas

Trying to find a way without taking ielts test or toelf because i dont have enough time and ielts dates are HORRIBLE

Perhaps they will accept my university's prep school diploma, they're member of EUA(european universities association)

    thanks for the answers

They didn't run any language tests or asked for language skills proof when I was doing the entrance exams in spring 2008 for international degree programs, so I know what I'm talking about this is a new rule for sure. They indeed checked the English skills but it wasn't the main thing they focused on. They just checked while talking that you'd understand English but I wouldn't consider this as a test.

The English classes that international degree program students (all of them, also Finns) have to take are not about basic English. It's business English and on more advanced level, so if you don't have good skills you're not able to survive in that class.

And like it's said you have to provide a proof. Maybe it's enough to submit some kind of a paper that shows you have studied English. The best case would be if you would have taken some kind of an exam about English and could provide a proof about that. But as I haven't got familiar with the admission rules it still might be that they need some other kind of a test Try also asking if it would be possible to do the English test while doing the entrance exams. Maybe it's arrangeable though might not work out if you have to provide the proof already while filling in the application to do the entrance exams.
