Re: Is Finland Educating Too Many Foreigners?

hello snow, I'm new in here.

I think that you are asking a wrong question. I consider that the right question should be: Is Finland keeping enough foreigners it educates?

Educating foreigners is a problem only if you cannot use their skills to increase Finnish competitiveness. If you educate them but cannot keep them, then is a cost instead of an investment.

I'll tend to agree with you. The immigrant integration program might just be lip service. Most foreigners who study here are not sufficiently encouraged to fit into the system. Or maybe I might just be out of the loop.

Right. I guess the international program is not strictly for the Finnish job market. Maybe I'm wrong, but the study is essentially Finnish in content. There must be a social aspect to it. My point is why teach foreigners in the Finnish code if they are being raised for the international market?

It's commendable that Finland provides free education but I just wonder if this is at all in the interest of Finland. Foreigners are predominately in courses like International business management, tourism etc, hence the graduates in these areas are largely left with an option of whether to work in different area or leave Finland.

If courses are offered in those areas where there are a shortage of skills, Finland might actually benefit from it. First, Finland needs to identify in which areas it lacks skilled manpower such as in the field of IT, healthcare, forests, mining etc etc and then graduates from these areas should be enticed to stay and work in Finland. Time to be bit clever Finland, eh?

I agree 100% with you. We should actually contact the ministry of education and ask them what the use of those degree programs are?

Re: Is Finland Educating Too Many Foreigners?

I fail to see how Finland could be educating too many foreigners if there are still so many vacant spots available. Are these foreign students studying in Finnish or English? If it's English, are they learning Finnish? We keep being told there is no job market if you don't speak the language so how can they possible hang on to these foreign people? And, are they doing their whole degree in Finland or just dropping in for a semester or two? Many students like to go abroad to study for part of their degree.

Does anyone here go to Uni in Finland? What's the workload like? How many units do you have to do per semester and how many days do you have to go to the campus?
