Okay, here are a few stupid questions, some possibly even asked beforehand. I'm about to finish my undergraduate degree in erm, tour guiding (believe it or not, that one could be studied only and only if you're a graduate of the foreign languages department in high school over here - great system), and while it will sound utterly irrelevant (the classes aren't as much so though), I actually want to do a master's degree in linguistics. I was just wondering how possible that could be, if at all in the slightest - say, are classes of the previous degree in their own taken into consideration (I know I would definitely not be the utmost priority when compared to regular graduates of relevant departments of course, even if this were possible). And if not, how does the actual uni entrance system work? Is there a university entrance exam to be taken in Finland, or does the one taken in my own country apply, or both, or does this depend solely on the universities? And since the master's degree also counts as the undergraduate degree, does this cause any complications when applying after the normal 4-year studies of my country?
Thanks in advance! =) |

Hello there!
What I think would be the best thing to do is to contact the university you want to study at. Only they can see about your previous degree and how it goes with the master you are applying for. What comes to universities in Finland, I think they all apply the same rules of entrance exams etc. It might be that you get some "points" for your previous studies, maybe not at all. It also depends if you want to make the whole degree here or just an exchange year. I can also help you in finding out some more information at the universities pages if you have a problem understanding them. T |

I guess I'll just have to contact shitloads of unis then, as it appears... =) And I want to finish a whole degree, and not just spend a single exchange year there. Wanted to look through the Helsinki Uni. site as well, for more info on their General Linguistics department, except I really can't work my way through the Finnish site and the english one really has pretty much nothing in terms of information... I'd appreciate help on that point. =) Thanks for the offer too ^^;
