Thread: Getting married in Finland

How is the procedure of a typical Finnish wedding?
Are there any advantages/disadvantages if you get married in Finland?

It is really difficult to answer because it depends on what is "normal" for you and what you are used to, what religion you have etc.

I think (not sure) that a traditional Finnish wedding takes place in a church and the ceremony practically the same as in most western countries (protestant). After the church you go to a hotel/restaurant/other eating/party place. What happens there is very much up to the couple (and the guests).

Have been at weddings where they didn’t really serve food, just some snacks (because most Finns eat their hot meal at lunch time). The food can be a buffet or have people serving (normal depends on the place the party is). I don’t think it’s normal to serve wine with the food but quite normal to have some alcohol for later. A band or other kind of music is also fairly common. At some weddings they have many "games" like "kidnap the bride" and the groom needs to do different things to get her back and others won’t have any.

The wedding can be as different as any other party


I really don’t see any advantages or disadvantages by being married in Finland, because it 100% depends on where your from, who you are marring, what you want/expect etc. etc.
