Finland Community  

I must admit, I haven't used it much :/ yes I did use some website, but I mainly learnt finnish from books or from songs, and chatting with finns (: It's really awesome that I met 5 of the finns with whom I have been chatting over internet. I am not really a big fan of meeting people from Internet, but they really wanted to meet, so I met them, and I don't regret it!
Rovaniemi would be nice! I haven't been there, but I went in Lapland. It is really beautiful. It sure is something to see!

Thanks a lot for the info! I’m definitely looking into being an exchange student in Finland although my Finnish isn’t very good. I’d like to be up north in Rovaniemi if I could, but any city in Finland would be great! The sauna is one of my favourite things about Finland. Although I’ve never viewed it as a family thing, it seems like it would be a nice family thing. I would love to be able to speak enough Finnish to get through the day. I’m glad I can ask for some coffee and say "I love Finland" already.
Today my classes were cancelled due to teacher meetings, and I’m having a nice cup of coffee. I found a couple of songs I liked and I studied some Finnish from “Ymmärrä suomea”. What do you think about this website for studying?

I really enjoyed staying in Helsinki because there are many things to do and visit. But, Finland isn't all about Helsinki. There are MANY other things to visit than just Helsinki.
Staying with a finnish family was the nicest thing about the whole trip. You live the typical finnish life, in a finnish family. you learn their way of life, and share a lot of things with them. You create bonds with them just like if they were your own real family. You go to sauna together, and I think that this makes you really part of the family, in a way. Sauna is taken naked, and being naked with my finnish family kind of really made me feel part of it. Of course, some might find it really awkward, but I didn't see things this way. Yes, I spoke quite often in Finnish with them. Most of the time, we would speak finnish when we ate supper together. with my host sister, I mainly spoke english, but we were fine this way. I had to speak finnish with the family and the family's friends, since most of them (well the older people) didn't speak english (some did understand it though). I now understand really well finnish. I'd say I understand a good 75% of what is said, maybe more. Hey! I can understand drunk finns, after all! :P
I speak finnish better, I think less about the grammar and it comes a bit more easily when I have to speak. of course, nothing is perfect, but I have been up quite a lot of steps, I think.
Hmm today I had a relaxation class.. my english class in the morning was cancelled! other than that, nothing special! what about you?

I guess mainly how it was like to be in Helsinki and to spend time with a Finnish family? Did you speak Finnish all of the time? Finally would you say it really helped your Finnish?

sure! no problem! I have written some stories about it. I kept a journal when I was in Finland, and wrote everyday. I haven't updated in a while, but I will update it later tonight!

Minä opiskelen lukiossa. Opiskelen englantia, latinia, laskuoppia, *ethics*, ja pelaan kitaralla. Entä sulle?
ethic is eettinen (I am not sure though) and when you say you play an instrument, its always the verb soittaa. so it would be soitan kitaraa (the instrument as to be in partitive) / no niin ku sanoin, opiskelen taidetta, kirjallisuuta ja kommunikatiota. no niin, opiskelen ranskaa, englantia ja espanjaa, filosofia ja suomea. minäkin soitan kitaraa. Opiskelen CEGEPissä... se on lukion ja yliopiston välissä

when you say minun or mun (sinun, sun, hänen, etc), don't forget to put the subject in genitive OR with the possesive ending (-ni, -si, -nsa/-insä, etc). i.e. minun suomen kielen ei ole hyvin (generaly, after a negative verb, its always in partitive, but there are exceptions). älä sano että sun suomen kielen on huono. minusta osaat ihan hyvin! <:
